When I look back at the news of 2011 we seem to have had an endless run of unexpected events and disasters.
The devastating floods in Queensland, unrest in the Middle East, an uprising in Egypt, war torn Libya, oil prices at record high, Japan’s earthquake and Tsunami and now a nuclear threat.
And it’s only the 16th March.
Am I alone in thinking there is greater global change happening more rapidly? And if so how will this affect us? To read more….
Now I don’t know about you but I find myself realising all of these events have one thing in common which is, I would never have believed any of them could happen so quickly and in such a short space of time.
The suffering is appalling and it’s hard to imagine how we might cope if our world was turned upside down like that so suddenly.
We live in an age when we can have media coverage flashed on our screens 24/7; progress in some ways but arguably a hindrance in others?
Today I’d like to pay homage to the wonder of the human spirit. That even in times of despair, there is heroic courage and inspiration to behold. In some cases, despite the obvious trauma for the victims, we have witnessed many heroic acts of kindness, rescue and support for fellow man in such dire circumstances.
I remember the married father saying how he was prepared to lay down his life for his countries freedom if it meant leaving a better life for his family; the look of resignation on the face of the family who had just had their home and possessions washed away. Then there was the boat load of school children rescued after the tsunami, sitting quietly and trusting the adults would look after them and that, ‘Tomorrow would be a better day’.
Sometimes I wonder if these things only happen to the strongest people for a reason or would we/could we, all reach for courage at that depth, if we really needed to?
One thing is for sure; those with that stoic determination are much more likely to survive. I feel that whatever challenges we face today, or next week – by reaching deep into our courage and determination, we can make tomorrow a better day for ourselves too, regardless of where we are today.
It can be all too easy to feel despondent in life when faced with shocking news, but when I look at the faces of those heroes facing adversity, I didn’t see caution or despondency. No, I saw courage and determination of gigantic proportions, beacons of hope amongst the devastation, where triumph can overcome disaster, where love will outlast fear and the will for peace will conquer strife.
As you go about your business this week think of how you can draw on the courage and inspiration of those worse off than our selves right now. Do it for you, do it for them and do it for the greater good for all. It has worked for us before and it will work for us again.
On a lighter note, if you are planning to visit the New Start Exhibition in Edinburgh this Friday and Saturday, be sure to visit the PS Life Can Be Easy Stand B15, say hello and take advantage of our show only offers. We look forward to seeing you there!
Have a great week!
