Fear, Does it hold you back?

Is 2011 a vintage year for you so far? What motivates you or rather what stops you feeling motivated? There are many schools of thought on what motivates us, what prevents us from getting things done and why we resist doing the things we do. Add into the mix the fact that most of us are unaware why we behave the way we do and you have the perfect ingredients to make up the average human being! Ok, no doubt you probably know this. But did you know why we resist in the first place, consciously or unconsciously? Are you aware of what you may be resisting and why? Does it matter if you do know and even then, is there any benefit for you to dissolve your resistance? Throughout my experience I have learned and can narrow down the reasons as to why we carry resistance within our psyche and behaviour, to the following: Fear or to put it another way, seeking security: This is the survivor instinct within all of us to keep us safe from harm. Here are some of the things you may consider would or can, harm you: - Fear of failure - Fear of others judging us - Fear we cannot do the job properly - Fear of what others may think - Fear of what others may say about you, often behind your back - Fear of losing money - Fear of losing our job - Fear of harm coming to your loved ones - Fear of losing someone - Fear of losing something - Fear of others turning resentful - Fear of others turning jealous - Fear of family disapproving - Fear of being discovered, found out While listing these examples can make sober reading, the good news is that everyone carries at least some of these behavioural patterns, often from childhood, and all can be easily eliminated, we just have to be willing to do so. 1. So where do these behavioural traits come from? 2. Why do we have them? 3. Why would any of us wish to hold on to them anyway, given that they only hold us back in life from achieving all the things we would like to, unless we eliminate them? My discoveries: 1. We can easily drop them, once we have become aware of them and decide to do so - albeit with help, admittedly. 2. They all accumulate in our neurology and are stored there until we release them. 3. They come to us from all our experiences in life, our conversations, what we hear, what we see, what we are told, what we say and how others react to it. As the memory stores away all this information, the emotional attachment we sub consciously place on it will drive our subsequent behaviour as we seek to keep ourselves safe from harm both in situations and with other people. Little do many of us realise that any fear we carry, limits us, restricts us and ultimately prevents us from feeling free from worry and happy. This is something we all crave. How often have you heard someone say they don't like heights or they are afraid of water, to give two examples. While this can be quite normal, what is interesting is whether or not these people actually wish to lose the fear or are resigned to living with it? Have you ever noticed how the most successful yet happy people rarely ever talk about their fears? That's because they don't carry many. This is why they succeed in what they do and are usually in good health too. It's no coincidence that fear, failure and illness lie alongside one another, like bed pals. That's because fear feeds failure and illness at the deepest level within us. Whereas being free of fear produces energy, achievement, success health and happiness. This comes as a surprise to a lot of people, especially when they don't think they are carrying many subconscious fears. I'll leave you 'safe' in the knowledge today that every fear can be dissolved! Have a great week. Billy
